If you would like to enjoy this adventure you need to stay a night in Musanze or travel before 5.00AM from Kigali. The activity starts at the same time like the gorilla trek and it is done once a day and in only morning hours! There are two stable communities within the park and led by guide visitors hike into the forest to meet these golden primates that are only native to the Virunga Region. Find out what made them golden as you walk through the bamboo forest in search for their presence while looking at other primates such as monkeys and baboons usually sighted along the trails acting as body guards for the golden troop.
The golden monkeys live in the bamboo vegetation towards the base of the volcanoes and that habituation helped them to overcome their initial shyness giving chance to tourists and researchers to experience the true golden monkey trek in the wild.
The monkeys are playful and inquisitive and often spend their time leaping from bamboo branches or skipping on the forest floor the time for trackers to take right positioned photos and observe them in close distances.
Today Volcanoes national park is a home to two habituated golden monkey groups comprising around 80-100 members and every encounter bring unusual smiles and experience to guests.
